George Gale, Traditional Brewery & TourGeorge Gale, Brewery
George Gale & Co Ltd is a long established traditional brewer founded in 1847 at Horndean, Hampshire. The company has grown since its early years and currently owns over 120 public houses. The trading area, mainly along the south coast, includes the Isle of Wight and the New Forest. Gale's, although best known for HSB brew a full range of traditional cask-conditioned beers using only the finest quality English aroma hops and the highest grade, floor-malted, Maris Otter barley. The award winning Prize Old Ale is brewed at Horndean and is still bottled, corked and labelled by hand - certainly a prize worth having! The brewers also have a selection of over 20 traditional Old Country Wines, ranging from birch and cowslip to strawberry and damson, enjoyed by the glass on their own, or as a refreshing spritzer. Visit George Gale & Co's traditional brewery at Horndean in England, just 12 miles north-east of Portsmouth on the old coach route from Portsmouth to London, now known as the A3. The Victorian Tower, rebuilt following the fire in 1869, is a local landmark and is immediately adjacent to the Ship & Bell Hotel where the brewery was originally founded. The Guided Tour includes an audio-visual presentation, followed by a tour around this most traditional of English breweries taking in the wellhead, the mash run, the copper, the cooler room, and the open wooden fermenting vessels which are still in use today. Savour the smells, sights and sounds of this truly unique brewery and afterwards sample one of the prize winning brews. The Brewery Shop sells a wide variety of brewery memorabilia, as well as Old Country Wines and of course Prize Old Ale and HSB. After the tour why not enjoy the superb hospitality of the Ship & Bell Hotel at Horndean, where a full range of the fine ales and an excellent menu can be sampled in comfortable surroundings.
