Some types of food I just can't imagine living without (mushrooms, cheese, bacon & sausages spring to mind), and then there are the classic simple recipes / combinations which are an essential part of our cuisine. Here I'm thinking of things like:

bulletBLTs (bacon, lettuce & tomato sandwiches)
bulletMozzarella, basil & tomato (with olive oil & fresh ciabatta bread)
bulletRhubarb crumble
bulletRoast beef & Yorkshire pudding

There are also more particular recipes which have become firm favourites in our household over time.

bulletStovetop Dauphinoise potatoes with pancetta and rocket (Nigel Slater) [Recipe]
bulletLamb burgers (Karen) [Recipe]
bulletTreacle sponge (Delia Smith) [Recipe]
bulletCherry Tomato Klafoutie [Recipe]

Before getting on to specific drinks, there are of course a number of food / drink combinations which should not be overlooked

bulletCheese & red wine
bulletChocolate sponge cake & red wine
bulletChampagne & strawberries

Eating out

The Old Chesil Rectory, Winchester

The former sous chef, Philip Storey, took over the business from the Ruthven-Stuarts last year. Reports suggest no dramatic changes in the quality of the food, which was excellent, but we haven't visited since the change. Menus are short and quite simple with daily specials listed on a blackboard. The Mediterranean is obviously an inspiration with the repertoire taking in risottos, sauce vierge, and the likes of langoustine bisque with rouille and Gruyére croûtes. The dessert list runs from crême brûlée to chocolate mousse and passion fruit sorbet. The wine list is divided by style - light, medium, full-bodied - and offers good variety in both the old and New World. Importantly, they now have an area for non-smokers. Prices are reasonable - expect to pay around £35 per head including wine. Contact them by telephone on: 01962 851555.

Hotel du Vin, Winchester

Hotel du Vin is housed in one of Winchester's most important Queen Anne buildings, dating back to 1715. Only three minutes walk from the historic Cathedral and close to the other attractions of this delightful city, Hotel du Vin is serving up its own brand of relaxed yet stylish hospitality. The 23 bedrooms offer simple understated quality without the frills.

Wine plays an important part, bedrooms sponsored and named after wine houses, and walls covered with wine prints and other memorabilia.

The wine list offers carefully selected wines by co-owner, Gerard Basset (European Sommelier of the Year) at very sensible prices to complement the modern Mediterranean style food.

The owners have subsequently opened further Hotels du Vin in Tunbridge Wells and  Bristol,  and the announcement of a fourth property is expected shortly. They believe that their motto of "good quality basics at reasonable prices" is a perfect hotel philosophy for a new millennium. Their website is at www.hotelduvin.co.uk.

Golden Phoenix

To my mind this is the best Chinese restaurant in Winchester. The special mixed starters in particular are a treat. It's small, so reservations are advisable (telephone 01962 840626) or they will do you a takeaway.
